St. Nicks Wins OT Thriller for Title

April 7, 2002 - St. Nicks (13-2-0) captured its 14th USA Hockey National Championship today when Joe Russo scored on a wrist shot from the blue line with six minutes left in the first overtime period to give St. Nicks a 3-2 victory over the Texarkana Bandits. It was the Nicks second win over the Bandits in the tournament. St. Nicks had tied the game with just 2:45 remaining in regulation time to send the game into overtime, despite outshooting and outplaying the Bandits most of the game. Jeff Hamilton scored the tying goal for St. Nicks and Marc Wyttenbach scored the team's first goal late in the first period. With the win, St. Nicks finished the 2002 national championship tournament undefeated, having won all five of its games. Earlier in the day, St. Nicks soundly defeated the Chicago Chargers 8-2 in the semi-finals, while Texarkana beat Bloomington, Minnesota Buck's Furniture 2-1 in overtime.  Tournament Standings & Results
